Essential knowledge for every investor navigating the Indian equity markets.

How Indian Stock Exchanges Work

India has two major stock exchanges: the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). The NSE is the largest exchange by trading volume, while the BSE is the oldest stock exchange in Asia, established in 1875.

Both exchanges are regulated by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), which ensures fair, transparent, and efficient markets. Listed companies must comply with SEBI’s disclosure requirements and corporate governance norms.

Key benchmark indices include the NIFTY 50 (NSE) comprising 50 large-cap stocks across 13 sectors, and the SENSEX (BSE) comprising 30 financially sound and well-established companies.

  • Trading hours: Monday to Friday, 9:15 AM – 3:30 PM IST
  • Settlement cycle: T+1 (trade date + 1 business day)
  • Demat account required for holding shares electronically
  • SEBI regulates all market participants and intermediaries
  • FPIs (Foreign Portfolio Investors) are significant market participants

Key Concepts for Indian Investors
